Kefalonia has an area of 688 sq km (266 sq miles) but with
only about 30,000 inhabitants.
No two Greek islands are alike no matter how close they may be to each other,
Kefalonia is very close to Zante and Corfu but quite different. With limestone
mountains capped by fir trees, many a hidden beach cove, mystical cave lakes
and picturesque headlands kefalonia is unique unto itself.
Kefalonia was made famous fairly recently by the film 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' starring Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz and John Hurt which was filmed on the island. The story was taken from real life history of the island's occupation in the 1940's.
You will not see much of the old Greek way of life as the earthquake in 1953 destroyed much of the islands buildings, although there are still pockets standing, much was rebuilt.
The main city of Kefalonia is Argostoli. The town of Argostoli was devastated by the 1953 earthquake and very few original features remain. It has an attractive waterfront which features a colourful fruit market. Local fishermen sell directly from their boats on the quayside. The main street Lithostroto is pedestrianised and has lots of shops, (closed at 2.00pm until around 5.00pm.) Many of the resorts do not have chemists, banks or cash machines but you will find these in Argostoli.
Argostoli has many historical
places of interest including museums, a few are:
Archeological
Museum
Corgialeneion
Historical and Folk Art Museum
Argostoli has an attractive main square the Platia Vallianou, with plenty of bars and tavernas in which to sit and watch the world go by. This is the place to visit in the evening for a bit of nightlife.
Along the northern part of the waterfront, you will come to the ferry terminal, here you can get a boat to many places including Lixouri which is just across the bay.
